Matt performed openned set this year at the LSMS. This was my first exposure to him and I was completely blown away. He is headline material; run, do not walk, to a show if you get the chance.
This is a rather small venue (http://www.regattabarjazz.com/)and I was able to get a table immediately in front of the stage. Sadly, the show was poorly marketed and the crowd was very small, a few dozen at best. Considring the caliber of the talent I was very surprised by the low turn-out. The band was also surprised but they put on a full, energetic and delightful show despite the small audience.
This was one of the last shows I shot with the Sony Cybershot. It was quite challenging due to the strong direct lighting blowing out the highlights and low general lighting for the rest of the scene. Because of the small crowd my shooting was quite obvious so I was a bit self-conscious. That camera had a rather loud shutter noise so I had to be careful to shoot only during the ‘loud bits’. 😉
This was a show I was looking forward to all season and he did not disappoint! He was constantly in motion with an agility of someone 20+ years his junior.
Despite a few too many ‘F-bomb’s from the stage for a family-friendly venue and embarrassingly bad behavior of some obviously drunk audience members this was a very enjoyable show. I would see him again in a heart beat!
Sadly, yet another ‘no real cameras’ show (Seriously? WHY?) so my shots are poor.
This is Andrew Trube of JJ Grey & Mofros band illustrating an improper technique. He was swinging the instrument around by the cable and then slamming it down on the cymbals. I don’t think this is covered in his warranty.
My mojo was definatetly not workin’ yesterday.
It started at about 6:30AM when the line to set down your blankets for the show was released early while I was having a conversation with one of the series bigwigs. I lost my normal spot to a ‘runner’.
I’ve been looking foward to this show all season and was very disapointed by a strict ‘no pro cameras’ policy. My backup camera, the Canon SX230 HS, doesn’t do well in very low light and the lighting for this show was much dimmer than usual.
This shot is the best of an embarrasingly bad set of shots from this show.
