Mosque of Córdoba / Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption, Córdoba, Spain

photo365 – Day 349

This is a truely fascinating and beautiful place. It started out as a Catholic church in the 7th century, was expanded and converted to a mosque in the late 8th and then back again to a Catholic cathedral in 1236.

It incorporates elements of early Greek and Roman architecture and reuses columns and other elements recovered from destroyed Roman era buildings.
